approved plans and estimates for the development of
the port of Whampoa.
Ir. Choy said that there were,
and that the cost is estimated at 20 million dollars.
•
I asked if I might be furnished with the plans and
estimates, and Ir. Choy undertook that he would have
this done. He has today telegraphed to 1r. Sun Fo
asking that the Whampoa plan should be sent to me.
Mr. Choy further said that the estimated cost of
completing the Canton-Hankow line would be 65 million
dollars, and that the existing portions of this line
were in such bad order that their rehabilitation would
be necessary, for which purpose at least another five million dollars would be necessary. He further said
that the rehabilitation of the Chinese section of
the Canton-Kowloon railway would have to be under taken
and that the cost of doing. so would be four million dollars, in which sum, however, he included provision
for building feeder lines, some to be motor roads
and some to be railroad extensions, on both sides of
the present main line. Thus the total cost of the
schemes put before me by Ir. Choy would, according to
his estimate amount to a sum of 94 million dollars,
excluding the cost of the loop-line at Canton, for
which he gave me no estimate.
5. The Government of Hong Kong is, of course, keenly interested in all the matters, which Ir. Choy touched upon.
As regards the rehabilitation of the
Chinese section of the Kowloon-Canton railway, I
may. refer you to the correspondence ending with my
telegram
